Albany, NY – Gray skies linger over the Hudson Valley this morning as cold air grips much of eastern New York. After a calm start to the week, a developing system midweek brings snow, sleet, and rain to the Capital Region, marking a true December transition.

The National Weather Service in Albany notes that light snow could begin Tuesday afternoon, with a more widespread wintry mix arriving Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Early accumulations may reach 1 to 3 inches north and west of Albany, though warmer air later Wednesday could change snow to rain. Drivers should plan for slushy roads and reduced visibility, especially during the morning rush and along I-87, I-88, and Route 7.

Wednesday’s temperatures rise into the upper 30s, enough to melt most lower-elevation snow. But by Wednesday night, colder air returns, refreezing wet surfaces and potentially creating slick patches and black ice for the Thursday morning commute.

Meteorologists warn this pattern could repeat heading into Dec. 11–17, with additional clipper systems sweeping across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Expect more bursts of snow, strong winds, and quick temperature swings — classic early-winter behavior as Arctic air builds across the northern tier.
