Albany, New York – Fires could spread rapidly within minutes Thursday afternoon as dry air and gusty winds combine to create dangerous conditions across eastern New York.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday for much of the Hudson Valley, where low humidity and wind gusts near 30 mph will create an elevated fire risk.
The threat extends beyond Albany into Saratoga Springs, Poughkeepsie, and surrounding communities, with additional concern across the Catskills and Mohawk Valley under a Special Weather Statement. Portions of western New England, including Bennington County, Vermont, are also included.
Dry fuels and spring vegetation will allow any fires that start to spread quickly, especially during peak afternoon heating. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and even small ignition sources such as cigarettes or equipment sparks could trigger fast-moving fires.
Residents are urged to follow local burn bans, properly dispose of smoking materials, and avoid activities that could create sparks.
The highest risk remains through Thursday evening, with additional alerts possible if dry and windy conditions persist.
