New York City, New York – A prolonged stretch of wet and potentially icy winter weather is expected to impact eastern New York and the New York City metro area beginning Thursday, raising concerns for hazardous travel and changing conditions through the weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, eastern New York is positioned in an above-normal precipitation zone through Monday, while temperatures hover near to slightly below seasonal averages. This setup supports periods of rain along the coast and a higher risk of freezing rain farther inland, particularly overnight and during early morning hours.

In the Hudson Valley and Capital Region, including Albany, Schenectady, Poughkeepsie, and Kingston, temperatures are expected to fluctuate near freezing, increasing the potential for sleet and freezing rain during heavier precipitation. Icy conditions may develop quickly on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces. Farther south, New York City, Long Island, and coastal sections of Westchester County are more likely to see cold rain, though brief freezing rain cannot be ruled out during colder nighttime periods.

Travel impacts are possible on major corridors including Interstate 87, Interstate 90, Interstate 84, the Taconic State Parkway, and throughout the New York City roadway network. Morning commutes could be especially challenging if freezing rain develops before temperatures rise above freezing.

This pattern is being driven by a broad cold front affecting much of the eastern United States, allowing cold surface air to linger while moisture continues to stream into the region. While widespread power outages are not expected, isolated issues could occur if ice accumulates on trees and power lines north and west of the city.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts, allow extra travel time, and use caution during periods of freezing rain. The unsettled pattern is expected to persist into early next week, with additional advisories or warnings possible as conditions evolve.
