Binghamton, NY — Rain and cooler temperatures are set to impact the Southern Tier this week, with potentially hazardous conditions arriving Wednesday night. The National Weather Service has issued an alert for heavy rainfall and possible high-elevation snow as a low-pressure system moves into the region.

According to the NWS Binghamton, clouds will linger through Tuesday, but the real disruption starts Wednesday evening. Rain is expected to intensify after 7 p.m., with 90% precipitation chances. Areas with higher elevations, including parts of the Catskills, may see snow accumulation by Thursday morning. Travel on I-81 and nearby routes could become slick, especially during overnight hours.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies with highs near 52 degrees. By Tuesday night, conditions will shift, bringing increasing clouds and a low around 39 degrees. Rain will dominate Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, with highs dipping to 43 degrees on Thursday and lows near freezing at night.

This wet pattern continues into Friday, with showers likely in the morning and daytime highs around 41 degrees. The weekend brings some reprieve, though lingering showers are possible Saturday. Highs will remain cool, hovering in the low 40s.

Residents are advised to prepare for changing road conditions and consider alternative travel routes during peak storm hours. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service for updates on snowfall potential, particularly in high-altitude areas.
