New York – Heavy lake effect snow continues to impact regions across western and northern New York, with snowfall expected to persist into Wednesday. Drivers and residents in Oswego, Buffalo, and Jefferson County are advised to prepare for dangerous travel conditions as accumulation totals climb.

According to the National Weather Service, areas in Oswego County could see up to 2 ½ feet of snow near the Jefferson County border by 1 p.m. Wednesday. Jefferson and Lewis Counties face similar challenges, with accumulations of 2 to 3 feet expected, particularly from Watertown southward. Buffalo and surrounding Southtowns may experience 18 inches of snow by early Wednesday.

Travel conditions remain treacherous. Officials have warned of temporary closures on major roadways, poor visibility, and deep snow on secondary streets. Drivers are urged to delay non-essential trips and use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable. The New York Department of Transportation recommends leaving extra space between vehicles and avoiding sudden maneuvers.

Residents should remain indoors whenever possible. If venturing outside, dressing in layers and covering exposed skin can help prevent frostbite. Hats, scarves, and gloves are essential in temperatures accompanying these conditions.

Lake effect snow bands are expected to shift overnight, potentially impacting new areas. Areas like Wyoming and Southern Erie Counties may also see heavy accumulation, with up to 2 feet possible in persistent snow bands.

The storm’s intensity highlights the importance of preparing for sudden shifts in weather. Stay tuned to local updates and advisories, and consider emergency kits for homes and vehicles.
