New York — Wet pavement glistens under streetlights this morning, but the shine hides danger. Meltwater from recent snow has begun to refreeze, creating nearly invisible ice on sidewalks, ramps, and untreated roads.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, patchy black ice is possible through tonight across the city and surrounding counties. Water has been observed refreezing after afternoon snowmelt, leading to slick travel conditions on untreated surfaces.
Temperatures hover near freezing early today, then slip back into the teens tonight. That swing increases the risk of flash freezing, especially on bridges, overpasses, and shaded streets. Pedestrians face slippery sidewalks, while drivers may encounter sudden loss of traction at intersections.
Conditions improve briefly as sunshine returns and highs climb into the lower 30s. To be fair, roads may look safe by midday. After sunset, however, another refreeze develops as temperatures fall quickly. Use extra caution walking dogs, climbing steps, or parking along side streets.
By Friday, attention shifts to a developing winter pattern. A weak system brings a chance for snow showers by Friday night, followed by gusty winds. Cold air deepens into the weekend, with wind chills dropping into the teens and single digits. Any fresh snow could again melt slightly during the day, then refreeze after dark.
Meteorologists are also tracking a broader pattern change. Arctic air grips much of the East through the weekend, while signs of moderation appear early next week. The 6–10 day outlook points toward a gradual warming trend later next week, hinting at above-normal temperatures returning to the region.
Plan extra time if traveling today and tonight. Slow down, wear shoes with traction, and expect slick surprises.
