BUFFALO, N.Y. – Western New Yorkers could catch a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight as clear skies stretch across the region. The aurora, typically limited to far northern latitudes, may be visible over Buffalo and surrounding areas through early Tuesday morning.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a powerful solar eruption is fueling moderate to strong geomagnetic storms. If skies stay clear, residents from New England to the Midwest could see green and purple hues ripple along the horizon. Buffalo’s mostly clear skies offer one of the best chances in New York to spot the display, especially away from city lights along Lake Erie and I-90.

Meteorological fall officially began today, and Tuesday will carry on with dry, mild conditions. Highs near 76 degrees and light winds will make for another pleasant day before more unsettled weather builds later this week. Showers and a few thunderstorms are expected Thursday, with rain chances continuing into Thursday night. Gusty winds may also accompany storms, possibly affecting commutes along the New York State Thruway.

Travelers should remain cautious late in the week as wet roads could lead to delays. Keep phones charged tonight if heading out to photograph the aurora, and check conditions before traveling Thursday.

Clear skies tonight may bring the best chance for aurora sightings in Buffalo before clouds return midweek. More advisories could follow if storm chances strengthen.
