BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Skies across New York may light up with the Northern Lights tonight into Tuesday morning, giving residents a rare chance to catch the colorful glow. With mostly clear skies expected, the Southern Tier, including Binghamton, could be in prime position for viewing if clouds stay away.
According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a strong coronal mass ejection from the sun is sparking geomagnetic storm activity that may make auroras visible well beyond their usual range. Skies from New England through the Midwest and into parts of Northern California could catch the display, but New York residents stand a strong chance if they step outside after dark.
For Binghamton, Tuesday will bring calmer weather with sunshine and highs near 79 degrees. Northeast winds remain light, and dry conditions will make for smooth travel along I-81 and local roads. Tuesday night stays mostly clear with a low near 53, offering another crisp early fall evening.
By midweek, temperatures hold steady around 80, keeping outdoor activities pleasant. The dry stretch will end Thursday, when showers arrive late in the evening. Rain intensifies Thursday night into Friday, with an 80% chance of showers that could slow morning commutes and outdoor plans.
Residents planning to view the aurora should move away from city lights, find a dark horizon, and look north after 10 p.m. Tuesday will be the best chance before cloud cover increases later in the week.
