New York’s Southern Tier wakes up to low clouds racing overhead, damp pavement, and a sharp bite in the air as winds surge early Monday. Gusts rattle signs and shake bare branches, setting a wintry tone for the final full week of 2025 and the busy travel window ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Wind Advisory is in effect from mid-morning through early evening. West winds will range from 15 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph across central New York and nearby northeast Pennsylvania. Binghamton, Ithaca, Cortland, Norwich, and Oneonta all sit within the advisory area.

Rain and wet snow showers linger early, then taper as colder air presses in. Roads remain wet through midday, especially along I-81 and Route 17, but conditions change fast by late afternoon. As temperatures fall into the 20s tonight, any leftover moisture could freeze. That raises the risk for black ice on untreated roads before Tuesday’s commute.

Tuesday stays cold and unsettled, with scattered snow showers and highs near 25. Winds remain brisk, keeping wind chills in the teens. By Wednesday, snow chances increase again, especially later in the day and into Wednesday night. Light accumulation is possible just as New Year’s Eve plans ramp up, and even minor snowfall could slow evening travel.

New Year’s Day 2026 stays wintry, with lingering snow showers and highs near 22. For now, totals look light, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles may keep sidewalks and parking lots slick. Drivers should plan extra time, slow down, and watch shaded areas where ice lingers longest.
