New York wakes up slick and gray across the Capital Region as freezing rain coats sidewalks, bridges, and untreated roads early Monday. Tires hiss on wet pavement, and every step outside feels tentative as ice clings just enough to cause trouble.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through the early morning hours. Freezing rain may leave ice accumulations up to a quarter inch across Albany, Rensselaer County, and nearby portions of eastern New York. Conditions improve later this morning as temperatures rise above freezing, allowing ice to change to plain rain.

Travel remains hazardous early, especially on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads. Portions of I-87, I-90, and Route 7 may stay slick longer than surrounding areas. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra stopping distance until crews fully treat roadways.

The weather does not settle for long. A Wind Advisory takes effect later today as west winds increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts over 40 mph possible into tonight. Gusty winds may bring down weakened tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, especially where ice lingers on branches.

Behind the system, colder air surges in fast. Temperatures tumble tonight into the teens, raising flash freeze concerns wherever moisture remains. By Tuesday, skies turn brighter but colder, with highs only in the mid-20s and a brisk wind adding bite.

Looking ahead, snow showers return midweek. Wednesday brings a chance for light snow during the afternoon and evening, followed by colder nights heading into New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Day 2026 stays cold and dry, with highs near the low 20s, favorable for travel but bitter for time outdoors.
