New York State – Pale winter light reflects off damp pavement this morning as cold air settles across the region, keeping a sharp edge to the start of the first weekend of 2026. Light snow has been flirting with parts of the state, and even minor accumulation could create slick conditions before temperatures slowly recover.
According to the National Weather Service, a narrow window for light snow lingers through the early part of the day, especially across the New York City metro and nearby suburbs. Any accumulation remains under an inch, but temperatures hovering near freezing raise concern for slushy roads and brief black ice.
In New York City, highs push into the low 30s today with clouds thickening at times. Light snow chances fade as the day progresses, yet wet surfaces may refreeze after dark. Drivers along I-95, the FDR Drive, and the Cross Bronx Expressway should expect patchy slick spots during evening travel. Plan extra time and reduce speed on untreated ramps.
Across upstate New York, colder air holds firm. Lake-effect snow continues east of Lake Ontario, adding several inches in localized bands. Farther south, conditions stay quieter but brisk, with a biting northwest breeze.
The good news comes early in the workweek. Temperatures rebound into the mid-30s Monday, then climb into the 40s by midweek. Melting snow by day followed by refreezing at night may still create flash-freeze risks on sidewalks and secondary roads.
