New York – Snow whips sideways across open streets this morning as gusty winds push bitter air inland. Visibility drops fast at times, and winter is firmly in control across western New York.
Buffalo remains under a Winter Weather Advisory through this evening. Lake-effect snow showers continue today, producing localized accumulations of one to three inches. Higher amounts remain possible south of the city and across higher terrain. Winds gust near 40 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow with sudden whiteouts. Roads may turn slick quickly, especially on I-90, Route 33, and secondary streets.
At the same time, a Cold Weather Advisory adds another layer of risk. Temperatures hover near zero, but wind chills plunge between 15 and 25 degrees below zero. Exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 15 minutes. Conditions feel harsh even during short trips outside.
Snow showers ease later today, but the cold does not. Tonight turns quieter, though clouds linger. Temperatures drop below zero again, and wind chills remain dangerous into early Sunday. Anyone traveling early should plan extra time and dress in layers.
Sunday stays cold but calmer. Skies turn partly cloudy, and highs struggle to reach the upper single digits. Sunday night brings clearing and continued cold, setting the stage for a slow recovery.
That recovery begins Monday. Temperatures climb into the lower 20s under mostly cloudy skies. By Tuesday, highs reach the upper 30s with a chance of snow showers mixing with rain. Midweek brings more moderation, with highs approaching the upper 30s to near 40 by Wednesday.
Looking farther ahead, a broader February thaw appears possible late next week. Above-normal temperatures may finally chip away at deep ice across the Great Lakes.
For now, limit travel, slow down on snow-covered roads, and protect exposed skin. How intense are conditions in your neighborhood right now?
