BINGHAMTON, NY – The National Weather Service in Binghamton reports that lake effect snow will continue to spread across central and northern New York today as a clipper system exits the region.

A more organized snow band is expected to develop over the Mohawk Valley later this morning and persist through the evening, producing heavy snow rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour.

Snowfall totals will range from 1–3 inches across much of the Southern Tier, to 3–4 inches near Syracuse, and locally 6–8 inches in parts of the northern Finger Lakes and along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Gusty winds of 30–40 mph will accompany the snow, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. Snow squalls may also develop this afternoon, causing brief whiteout conditions and slick, snow-covered roads.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 AM Friday, with a Winter Storm Warning expiring at 1 PM today for some northern counties.

Drivers should slow down, avoid sudden braking, and allow extra travel time as road conditions deteriorate quickly in heavier snow bands.
