Central New York – A sharp lake-effect snow gradient is producing dramatically different winter conditions across central New York, with impacts shifting from a Winter Storm Warning to advisories within just a few miles of Lake Ontario.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Oswego County until 7 p.m. Saturday, where persistent lake-effect snow bands are expected to deliver an additional 8 to 12 inches of snow, mainly across central and northern portions of the county. Travel conditions are described as very difficult, with deep snow cover and severely reduced visibility.

Just south and east of the warning area, Lake Effect Snow Warnings remain in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday for northern and southern Oneida County, issued by the National Weather Service in Binghamton. Northern Oneida County, including areas near Camden and Florence, could see up to 4 additional inches, while southern Oneida County, including Utica and Rome, is expected to receive around 1 inch before the warning expires.

Farther southeast, conditions ease slightly. A Winter Weather Advisory continues for southern Herkimer County until 7 a.m., where up to 2 inches of additional snow is expected. The heaviest lake-effect band is forecast to remain north of the New York State Thruway, limiting accumulations farther south.

The National Weather Service emphasized that lake-effect snow can change rapidly over short distances, with heavy snow and near-zero visibility giving way to dry conditions just a few miles away. Motorists are urged to delay travel if possible and be prepared for sudden deteriorations in road conditions, especially near Lake Ontario and along north–south routes.

Additional lake-effect snow showers are expected tonight into Sunday, though with lighter accumulations as bands weaken and shift.
