Binghamton, N.Y. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could strike Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon, with isolated tornadoes possible east of I-81 between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a cold front pushing southeast into the region is expected to trigger storms capable of producing damaging winds, locally heavy rainfall, and isolated flash flooding. The main threat zone stretches across areas like Binghamton, Elmira, and Scranton, with enhanced concern for tornado activity in locations east of the I-81 corridor.
Isolated tornadoes aren’t guaranteed, but conditions could favor brief spin-ups, particularly in Susquehanna County, PA, and Broome County, NY. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the area under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) for severe weather.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and prepare for rapid changes in conditions during the afternoon and early evening. Avoid unnecessary travel, and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if venturing outdoors.
More updates are expected throughout the day as storm development begins. Warnings may be issued quickly with little lead time.
