New York, New York – Drivers across parts of southern New York and western Connecticut are facing slick and potentially icy roads early this morning as freezing drizzle continues to impact the region during the peak commute window.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early morning for Orange and Putnam counties in New York, along with northern Fairfield and northern New Haven counties in Connecticut. Light freezing rain or freezing drizzle is producing a thin glaze of ice, especially in areas where temperatures remain at or just below freezing.

The most hazardous conditions are concentrated along and north of the Interstate 84 corridor, including portions of northern Putnam County and areas west of Middletown in Orange County. Bridges, overpasses, untreated secondary roads, and shaded surfaces are especially vulnerable to icing, which can develop quickly and be difficult to see.

Commuters traveling through the Hudson Valley, interior southwestern Connecticut, and higher elevations should allow extra travel time and reduce speeds. Even a light glaze of ice can significantly reduce traction and increase stopping distances.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise later this morning, allowing freezing drizzle to transition to plain rain or end altogether. However, isolated slick spots may persist beyond the advisory expiration. Drivers are urged to remain cautious and monitor local DOT updates as conditions slowly improve.
