Binghamton, New York – Drivers across the Southern Tier and nearby northeast Pennsylvania could encounter slick roads within the next few hours as a brief but impactful window of freezing rain and drizzle develops during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday for Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Sullivan, and surrounding counties in New York, as well as Susquehanna and Northern Wayne counties in Pennsylvania. Ice accumulations are expected to range from a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch, enough to make untreated roads hazardous.
Mixed precipitation continues into the evening, with freezing drizzle possible as temperatures hover near freezing. Bridges, overpasses, ramps, and secondary roads are most likely to ice over first in areas including Binghamton, Cortland, Norwich, Oneonta, Delhi, Monticello, Montrose, and Hallstead. Sidewalks and parking lots may also become slippery with little warning.
State and local highway crews are monitoring conditions, but motorists are urged to reduce speeds, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Travelers should check 511 in New York or 511PA for real-time road conditions before heading out.
Icing diminishes late tonight as temperatures rise slightly, though isolated slick spots may linger into early Wednesday. Advisories remain in effect through 1 a.m., and additional updates may follow if freezing drizzle persists longer than expected.
