New York City, New York – A prolonged stretch of wintry conditions could bring accumulating snow and travel disruptions across New York as a late-January pattern favors colder air and organized storm systems moving through the region.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, much of New York is under a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling an increased chance for at least one impactful snow event during that timeframe. The risk covers western, central, and eastern portions of the state, including major population centers.

In western New York, including Buffalo and surrounding Erie County, lake-enhanced snowfall could come into play if colder air deepens over the Great Lakes. That setup can quickly lead to reduced visibility and hazardous conditions along Interstates 90 and 190 during heavier snow bands.

Central and eastern areas such as Albany may see snow chances spread across multiple days, raising the potential for cumulative impacts on state highways and local roads. Farther south, including New York City and the lower Hudson Valley, colder-than-normal temperatures increase confidence that any late-January system arrives mainly as snow rather than rain, which could disrupt commutes and transit operations.

The New York State Department of Transportation urges residents to stay alert for changing road conditions, allow extra travel time, and prepare vehicles with winter safety supplies. With below-normal temperatures favored to persist, snow that falls may linger.

Additional advisories and more specific timing details are expected as the late-January window approaches, with updates likely by early next week.
