Binghamton, NY — Rain and melting snow are set to cause potential flooding issues across Binghamton and surrounding areas starting Sunday night. Local residents should prepare for possible minor flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service, rain showers will begin Sunday morning, intensifying through Sunday night and into Monday. With temperatures reaching 56 degrees, warm air will rapidly melt snowpack, combining with up to 1.5 inches of rain. Flooding risks are highest along local creeks, small streams, and flood-prone roadways, especially Interstate 81 and Route 17.

Wind gusts up to 35 mph on Monday could also weaken tree branches and create additional travel hazards. Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and avoid driving through flooded areas.

The extended forecast includes cooler conditions by midweek. Showers will persist on Tuesday, followed by a colder New Year’s Eve with rain and potential snow. Wednesday’s high will hover near 40 degrees, with mixed precipitation likely.

Residents should remain vigilant as rapidly changing conditions may affect travel and holiday plans. Keep emergency kits ready, and ensure gutters and storm drains are clear of debris to minimize flooding risks.
