NEW YORK, N.Y. – Boaters across New York Harbor are being urged to secure their vessels as powerful winds and rough seas threaten the region through early Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a Storm Watch that remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday, warning of gusts that could reach 50 knots and waves building up to 8 feet in open waters.
According to the National Weather Service in Upton, the combination of gale-force winds and hazardous wave conditions could capsize small vessels or make navigation nearly impossible at times. A Low Water Advisory is also in effect beginning overnight Wednesday, with below-normal water levels expected to complicate travel in shallow areas.
Mariners are advised to remain in port or adjust course before conditions deteriorate. Those navigating nearshore should proceed with extreme caution, especially around low-lying docks and channels where low water levels could expose hazards.
The Storm Watch will continue through early Thursday, with conditions expected to gradually improve by midday. Additional marine advisories could be issued if winds persist beyond Thursday morning.
