Binghamton, NY – Residents across Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania should prepare for the season’s first widespread frost tonight, with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton issuing frost and freeze alerts through Thursday morning.
According to the NWS, a Frost Advisory is in effect from midnight through 8 a.m. Thursday for much of the region outside of the Finger Lakes and Wyoming Valley. Meanwhile, a Freeze Warning has been issued for Northern Oneida, Delaware, and Otsego counties, where temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
Forecasters project overnight lows ranging from the upper 20s in Boonville and Delhi to the upper 30s in Binghamton, Ithaca, and Montrose. Clear skies and calm winds will allow frost to form, especially in sheltered valleys. The NWS cautions that these conditions could damage or kill sensitive vegetation and outdoor plants if left unprotected.
Daytime highs Wednesday will feel seasonably cool, mostly in the low to upper 60s with sunny skies, but the quick drop in temperatures overnight will mark a noticeable shift to more fall-like conditions.
The NWS recommends covering plants or bringing them indoors where possible. Farmers and gardeners are urged to take action to protect crops from potential frost damage.
