Buffalo, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Jefferson County from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday as freezing rain and ice accumulation threaten northern New York travel and infrastructure.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a brief period of wet snow is expected Friday evening before a transition to freezing rain, continuing through at least part of Sunday. Ice totals could range from one-quarter to one-third of an inch, especially in areas near the Saint Lawrence Valley and northern Jefferson County, including Watertown, Clayton, and Philadelphia.
Total snow accumulation is expected to remain under an inch. Hazardous road conditions and isolated power outages are possible, particularly in areas experiencing the highest ice amounts.
Motorists are advised to avoid nonessential travel during peak icing periods. Residents should prepare for potential power disruptions and keep emergency supplies on hand. Icing of sidewalks and untreated roads could make pedestrian and vehicular travel dangerous.
This weather event follows a seasonally active winter for upstate New York, where freezing rain poses a recurring challenge. Authorities urge residents to monitor updates via the National Weather Service and local emergency alerts through the weekend.
