Binghamton, N.Y. – Light to moderate rainfall spreading across eastern New York is raising flood concerns through Saturday morning, especially in higher terrain areas like the Catskills and Poconos.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, over an inch of rain is expected to fall across much of the region, with some localized areas potentially seeing higher totals. While widespread flash flooding appears unlikely, isolated flash flood incidents remain possible today due to poor drainage and saturated soils in the eastern counties.

The more significant risk now appears to be minor river flooding, as streams and tributaries—particularly along the Upper Susquehanna—are already running high. While the Chemung River basin is not currently at risk, the NWS warns that prolonged rainfall through tonight may push smaller waterways to the brink. Areas like Delhi, Walton, and Hancock may see sharp rises in water levels.

Drivers should avoid low-lying roads and monitor for water covering streets, especially in rural areas where culverts may clog quickly. Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to secure valuables and stay alert for rising waters.

Flood alerts remain in effect into Saturday, with river levels expected to peak by Sunday. Additional watches may be issued if rainfall intensifies overnight.
