BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A stretch of cool, dry Fall weather is setting up across the Southern Tier, but clear skies and calm winds may also trigger the region’s first frost of the season by Thursday morning. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect sensitive plants and outdoor equipment as temperatures drop near freezing in rural valleys.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, skies remain mostly cloudy Tuesday with highs near 66°F before clearing overnight. Wednesday brings full sunshine and a crisp northwest breeze, followed by the sharp cooldown. Lows will plunge into the mid-30s Wednesday night, with some outlying areas dipping near 32°F. Frost will likely form in low-lying zones from Chenango to Tioga Counties.

High pressure continues to dominate through late week, keeping skies clear and humidity low. Thursday and Friday will feature bright sunshine and cool afternoons with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds will stay light, making for comfortable but brisk Fall days across Broome County and nearby communities.

Travelers along I-81 and Route 17 can expect excellent driving conditions midweek, though early morning fog and frost could briefly reduce visibility in rural stretches. The weekend looks mild, with highs rebounding into the 60s and 70s Saturday before a slight chance of rain returns Sunday.

The upcoming frost marks a clear shift toward late-Fall chill in upstate New York — a reminder that the season’s first freeze is right around the corner.
