NEW YORK, N.Y. – A powerful coastal storm is poised to disrupt the Columbus Day holiday across New York and nearby coastal areas, bringing gusty winds, pounding rain, and the risk of coastal flooding through Monday evening. Travel along I-95, I-278, and shoreline routes could be slowed by water-covered lanes and strong crosswinds during the height of the storm.

According to the National Weather Service in Upton, a Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through late Monday, covering New York City, Long Island, southern Westchester, and parts of coastal Connecticut. Forecasters warn that strong northeast winds may pile up tides 1 to 2 feet above normal, especially during high tide cycles from Sunday night into Monday. Rainfall totals between 1.5 and 3 inches could worsen drainage flooding in low-lying neighborhoods.

The heaviest rain and strongest winds are expected Sunday night through Monday. Gusts near 40 mph could knock down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. New Yorkers planning to travel for the holiday should allow extra time, especially along coastal parkways and major bridges. Those living near the shore should secure loose outdoor items and move vehicles to higher ground.

The weather calms by Tuesday, giving way to drier, cooler Fall air and improving visibility for leaf-peeping and pumpkin patch outings later in the week. Temperatures will trend near seasonal norms by midweek, with sunnier skies ahead.
