New York City, New York – A prolonged blast of arctic air is expected to grip New York City late this week, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the season and creating hazardous conditions during overnight and early morning hours. Overnight lows are expected to drop near 9 degrees, while daytime temperatures struggle to climb out of the teens through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, the coldest stretch is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a polar air mass settles across the Northeast. Gusty northwest winds will make conditions feel even colder at times, driving wind chills into the single digits and below zero, particularly before sunrise.
All five boroughs are expected to feel the impact, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. While no significant snowfall is expected, lingering moisture and refreezing could lead to icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Commuters may encounter slick sidewalks and roadways along major routes such as the FDR Drive, West Side Highway, Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and local streets during the coldest mornings.
City officials urge residents to limit prolonged outdoor exposure, dress in warm layers, and check on elderly neighbors. Drivers should allow extra time during early commutes and remain alert for icy spots, while homeowners are advised to protect exposed pipes from freezing.
The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, and additional cold weather advisories may be issued as conditions remain well below normal.
