Albany, New York – A powerful surge of arctic air is expected to lock in across New York late this week, bringing a prolonged period of dangerous cold that could strain infrastructure and create hazardous conditions statewide. Overnight lows are expected to fall near 7 degrees below zero in parts of the state, with daytime highs struggling to rise out of the single digits through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, the coldest stretch is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a polar air mass settles over the Northeast. Gusty northwest winds will drive wind chill values down to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero at times, especially overnight and during the early morning hours, increasing the risk of frostbite with short exposure.
The harshest conditions are expected across upstate New York, including the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, North Country, and portions of Central New York. Cities such as Albany, Syracuse, Utica, and Watertown could see extended subzero wind chills, while lake-effect snow showers east of Lake Ontario may create slick travel on Interstate 90, Interstate 81, and Route 12.
State emergency management officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets are brought inside. Homeowners are advised to protect exposed pipes and check heating systems, while drivers should keep winter emergency kits in vehicles in case of breakdowns.
The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, and additional wind chill advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases.
