Buffalo, N.Y. – Strong thunderstorms are set to rumble through western and north-central New York this afternoon and evening, bringing threats of damaging winds, large hail, and localized flash flooding to cities including Buffalo, Rochester, and Wellsville.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a marginal risk for severe weather is in place Tuesday, May 6, 2025, with storms expected to produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, one-inch hail, and flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. A higher risk zone for flash flooding has been identified near Wellsville due to heavy rainfall from Monday.

Communities at elevated risk include Geneva, Oswego, Fulton, and Jamestown. Flood-prone roads and rural areas, especially in Allegany and Steuben counties, may become hazardous with little warning. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and keep phones charged in case of emergency alerts or power outages.

The unsettled pattern follows a weekend of soaking rain, increasing the potential for runoff issues. Residents should secure outdoor items and stay indoors during storms.

Storm activity is expected to taper off by early Wednesday, but additional watches or warnings could be issued later tonight. Stay tuned to local weather updates and be ready to act.
