NEW YORK, N.Y. — A stormy Columbus Day will test travelers and commuters across the New York metro area as gusty winds and coastal flooding threaten the city’s shoreline. The National Weather Service has a Coastal Flood Warning and Wind Advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, with north-northeast gusts up to 45 mph expected to impact travel and cause minor shoreline inundation.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, NY, rainfall between a half and three-quarters of an inch will combine with an onshore wind to create moderate coastal flooding along I-278, FDR Drive, Coney Island, and parts of Staten Island. High tides could push water onto low-lying streets during the morning and midday cycles. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to secure outdoor decorations and Halloween displays ahead of the wind.

Power interruptions remain possible in Queens, Brooklyn, and coastal New Jersey, particularly near exposed areas. The New York City Emergency Management Department advises charging devices and checking sump pumps before the heaviest rain. Conditions gradually improve by Tuesday morning, when clouds break and temperatures climb to the mid-60s, offering a better start for back-to-school and post-holiday commuters.

By midweek, a refreshing Fall chill settles in, setting up ideal weather for pumpkin patches and park leaf viewing as drier air takes over through Thursday.
