New York, NY – Holiday travelers across New York City and Long Island are facing heavy rain, gusty winds, and coastal flooding this Columbus Day. The National Weather Service warns that water levels may rise 1 to 2 feet above normal tide levels, causing potential flooding in low-lying coastal and shoreline areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, October 13, with a Wind Advisory through the evening. Northeasterly winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts nearing 45 mph, may make travel along I-278, the Belt Parkway, and the FDR Drive challenging during the morning and afternoon hours.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations and prepare for slick roadways and reduced visibility during commutes. Coastal drivers should avoid flooded routes, as tides are expected to peak early this afternoon.

By Tuesday, rain chances taper off, leading to partly cloudy skies and milder conditions. Wednesday marks the start of a calmer stretch with mostly sunny skies and highs near 64°F. A noticeable fall chill will return late in the week, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s by Thursday night.

Five-Day Outlook (New York City Area):

  • Monday: Rain, windy, high 61°F. Coastal flood risk.
  • Tuesday: Chance of showers, high 63°F.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high 64°F, low 48°F.
  • Thursday: Clear and cool, high 57°F.
  • Friday: Sunny and crisp, high 60°F.
