New York wakes up to rattling windows and wet pavement this morning as strong winds sweep across the Southern Tier, setting the stage for a quick winter shift. Rain pushes east early, winds surge behind it, and colder air waits close behind.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Wind Advisory remains in effect into early Saturday morning, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph at times. A narrow line of heavy showers moves west to east early, followed by strengthening westerly winds. As temperatures fall later today and into Saturday, rain may briefly mix with snow, especially on higher terrain.

Across Binghamton, Johnson City, Endicott, and along Route 17 and I-81, drivers should prepare for sudden gusts, blowing debris, and pockets of poor visibility. Wet roads may refreeze as colder air settles in, creating early-season black ice on bridges and untreated surfaces. Secure loose decorations and plan extra time if traveling.

Saturday brings a calmer look but colder air. Clouds increase, and while accumulation appears limited, even light snow could impact travel with temperatures hovering near freezing. By Sunday, sunshine returns briefly, but brisk winds keep wind chills sharp, reminding the region winter is settling in.

Meteorologists are now tracking a developing Christmas travel pattern. Models hint at additional snow chances early next week and again closer to Thursday, with temperatures staying seasonably cold. Any melting during daylight could refreeze quickly after dark, increasing slick road risks for returning holiday travelers.

Keep winter gear ready, slow down on wet or icy roads, and check conditions before longer trips. Traveling for Christmas? Share what you’re seeing where you are.
