Binghamton, N.Y. – Morning fog could slow commuters across the Southern Tier Monday, with drivers along Interstate 81 urged to use caution. Limited visibility may persist until 9 a.m. before sunshine returns and temperatures climb into the low 80s.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, calm winds and patchy fog are likely early Monday. Once the fog lifts, skies will clear quickly, delivering another unseasonably warm September day with highs near 81 degrees.
The fog risk is highest in valleys and low-lying areas, especially near river crossings and on stretches of I-81, Route 17, and Route 11. Drivers should reduce speed, keep headlights on, and allow extra space during the morning commute.
After fog clears, sunshine dominates much of the week. High pressure keeps skies mostly clear through Wednesday, with daytime highs reaching 80 to 83 degrees and overnight lows in the low to mid-50s. Wednesday looks partly sunny before another dry, warm stretch carries into Friday.
Residents should stay alert for rapidly changing conditions during foggy mornings, especially in rural and wooded areas where visibility can vanish within seconds. Emergency officials recommend giving yourself extra travel time and avoiding sudden lane changes.
The pleasant stretch won’t last forever. Cooler, fall-like air begins edging closer by the weekend, bringing highs in the 70s by Saturday.
More updates will be issued if advisories are extended or expanded.
