Binghamton, New York – A surge of Arctic air is delivering one of the coldest stretches of the season across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania, with dangerous wind chills well below zero making outdoor conditions hazardous through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, west to west-southwest winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph are combining with frigid air to drive wind chill values as low as 10 to 25 degrees below zero early Tuesday. Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect through mid-morning for northeast Pennsylvania and parts of the Southern Tier, including Steuben, Yates, Schuyler and Chemung counties.
Across the region, daytime highs are expected to remain in the teens, with overnight lows dropping back into the single digits. Areas from Binghamton and Ithaca to Elmira, Cortland and Norwich are seeing the coldest wind chills during the overnight and early morning hours, when frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin.
Northern Oneida County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory into early Wednesday, while wind chills from near 5 degrees above zero to 10 below zero are expected to persist through Wednesday morning. Another surge of Arctic cold is already being monitored for later in the week.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin and check on vulnerable neighbors. Officials warn that additional cold-related advisories may be issued as this prolonged stretch of bitter winter weather continues.
