New York, New York – Outdoor air pollution levels across New York City and surrounding suburbs are expected to climb above healthy limits through midnight Wednesday night, prompting officials to urge caution for millions of residents.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, an Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Westchester and Rockland counties. Fine particulate levels are forecast to push the Air Quality Index above 100, a threshold considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Communities across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, Yonkers and New Rochelle could experience reduced air quality, particularly during peak daytime and evening hours. Health officials recommend that children, older adults and anyone with asthma, heart disease or other respiratory conditions limit strenuous outdoor activity.
Residents experiencing coughing, shortness of breath or throat irritation should move activities indoors and consult a physician if symptoms persist. Schools and athletic programs may consider modifying outdoor practices.
Air quality conditions will be reevaluated Wednesday night. Additional advisories could be issued if particulate levels remain elevated. Real-time updates are available through the state’s air quality hotline and online monitoring tools.
