New York City, New York – A noticeable break from winter cold is expected across New York by Thursday as temperatures climb above freezing, setting up a mid-February thaw that could quickly change travel and road conditions statewide.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the 8–14 day outlook valid from Friday, February 13 through Thursday, February 19 favors above-normal temperatures across most of New York. Highs are expected to consistently rise into the mid to upper 30s beginning Thursday, accelerating snowmelt on roads, sidewalks, and rooftops.

New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and much of central New York fall squarely within the warmer-than-average signal, while even upstate locations trend milder than seasonal norms. Overnight lows are also forecast to moderate, reducing extreme cold but increasing the risk of refreezing where meltwater remains after sunset.

Precipitation probabilities trend near to slightly above normal during this period, raising the chance for rain or a rain-snow mix as warmer air moves in. Major corridors including I-87, I-90, I-95, and the Long Island Expressway could see slick spots during the morning and evening commutes, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.

The milder pattern is expected to persist into the middle of next week. Residents should monitor updated advisories, as additional short-term alerts may be issued if precipitation timing becomes more defined across the state.
