Utica, NY – Snow bands dumping up to 7 inches overnight are creating hazardous travel across Oneida County just hours before the Wednesday morning commute, with the heaviest impacts lining up along the Interstate 90 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday for both northern and southern Oneida County. Snowfall totals between 5 and 10 inches are expected across the Mohawk Valley, especially from Utica to Rome, while outlying areas may see 1 to 4 inches. Visibility can drop sharply within heavier bands, creating rapidly changing road conditions.

Drivers along I-90, Route 49, and Route 12 face the greatest risk, where bursts of heavy snow can quickly cover lanes and reduce visibility to under a half mile. Conditions may vary dramatically over short distances, with clear roads in one town and near whiteout conditions just miles away.

Officials urge motorists to delay travel during the early morning hours if possible. If travel is necessary, keep emergency supplies in your vehicle and check 511 for live road conditions.

Snow bands are expected to weaken and shift north by mid-morning, but slippery roads may linger into the commute. Additional advisories remain possible if bands redevelop.
