Binghamton, New York – Snow will begin spreading across the Southern Tier and northeast Pennsylvania by 1 p.m. Sunday, setting up hazardous travel before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Monday for Broome, Chenango and Madison counties in New York and Bradford County in Pennsylvania. Total snowfall between 2 and 7 inches is expected. North-northwest wind gusts up to 35 mph will increase Sunday night and continue through Monday, causing blowing and drifting snow that may sharply reduce visibility.
Communities including Binghamton, Norwich, Oneida, Hamilton, Towanda and Sayre could see snow-covered roads by late afternoon. Interstates 81 and 88, along with Route 17 and Route 12, may become slick overnight. Open stretches of highway are most vulnerable to drifting snow as winds strengthen.
Both the Monday morning and evening commutes could be impacted as snow lingers and winds remain gusty. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and check 511NY or 511PA for updated road conditions before heading out.
Snow tapers late Monday, but drifting and slick spots may persist into the evening hours as winds slowly diminish.
