Binghamton, NY – Scattered severe thunderstorms are targeting Central and Northern New York this afternoon, putting 4.9 million residents under threat for damaging winds, hail, and localized flash flooding until 8 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, storms will fire up between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with areas like Syracuse, Utica, and Binghamton facing the highest risk. The strongest storms could bring wind gusts up to 65 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. A tornado or two is also possible, especially near the New York–Vermont border.
Localized rainfall totals may exceed 1.5 inches in areas hit by multiple storm rounds. Flash flooding is a growing concern in Oneida County and other spots with already saturated soil. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for much of the region, including Elmira, Ithaca, and Monticello.
Residents should charge devices, stay indoors during warnings, and avoid travel through flood-prone roads. Secure loose outdoor items and prepare for brief power outages where winds are strongest.
Storm watches and warnings remain active through 8 p.m., with further alerts possible if storm strength escalates.
