Binghamton, New York – 30°F morning temperatures are freezing roads and creating slick travel conditions through the Sunday commute, especially on untreated surfaces across the Southern Tier.

Cold high pressure is holding temperatures well below seasonal norms through the weekend, with many areas including Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, and Oneonta starting mornings in the 20s and only reaching the upper 40s to near 50°F by Sunday afternoon. Overnight refreezing will continue to create patchy black ice, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, dry conditions dominate through Sunday under high pressure, but the cold pattern will persist with repeated sub-freezing nights. Areas such as Syracuse, Utica, and Scranton will also see similar temperature swings, with morning lows dipping into the upper 20s and low 30s.

Travel impacts will be most noticeable during early morning hours along I-81, I-86, and Route 17, where residual moisture can freeze quickly. Drivers should reduce speeds and allow extra stopping distance, especially in shaded or rural areas.

A significant pattern shift arrives by Tuesday into Wednesday, when widespread rain is expected across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania. Rain chances increase sharply, with periods of steady rainfall likely to impact commutes and outdoor plans.

Cold conditions ease by Monday with highs climbing into the 50s, but overnight freezing risks remain through Sunday morning before a gradual warm-up begins.
