Albany, N.Y. – Slippery roads are expected to spread across eastern New York and western Massachusetts by the evening commute, with snow and pockets of freezing rain creating icy travel through 4 a.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Capital District, Mohawk Valley, eastern Catskills, Taconics and Berkshire County. Additional snow accumulations up to 2 inches are likely, along with a light glaze of ice, especially along and south of Interstate 90 and in higher elevations.

Rain and snow mixing this afternoon will transition to all snow by Wednesday evening from Albany and Schenectady to Pittsfield and Hudson. As temperatures drop below freezing overnight, untreated roads, sidewalks and overpasses could turn icy. Routes including I-90, I-87 and portions of the New York State Thruway may see slick stretches, particularly on bridges and elevated surfaces.

Cities such as Troy, Amsterdam, Gloversville and Great Barrington could see reduced traction during the late evening hours. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance.

Snow tapers before daybreak Thursday, but black ice may linger into the early commute. Additional advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread overnight.
