New York — Wind bites exposed skin, and snow squeaks under boots as Arctic air tightens its grip. The cold is already dangerous, and a long-duration winter storm is now unfolding across eastern New York.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains active through mid-morning, with wind chills plunging 15 to 25 degrees below zero. Frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes. Dress in layers and limit time outdoors.
Attention quickly shifts to snow. A Winter Storm Warning takes effect Sunday morning and lasts through 7 p.m. Monday. Snow spreads in steadily, becoming heavy by afternoon. Widespread totals of 12 to 18 inches are expected around Albany, with up to 24 inches possible in the eastern Catskills and nearby high terrain.
Snowfall rates may reach one to two inches per hour at times. Visibility drops quickly when bands intensify. Roads become snow-covered, and travel grows difficult. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly by Sunday afternoon. Plan extra time or delay travel if possible.
Light snow continues into Monday before tapering late in the day. The Monday morning commute is expected to be heavily impacted. Crews may struggle to keep pace during peak snowfall.
Behind the storm, cold air lingers. Nighttime temperatures drop into the single digits, with subzero wind chills returning. Melting snow during daylight may refreeze after sunset, increasing the risk of flash freezing on untreated roads and sidewalks.
Looking ahead, long-range outlooks suggest colder-than-normal conditions persist into late January, while precipitation chances gradually decrease. Winter remains firmly in control across the Capital Region.
