Oswego, New York – Drivers across northern New York could face slick roads within the next several hours as a mix of snow and freezing drizzle develops this evening, setting the stage for more significant snowfall overnight and through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties until 1 a.m. Thursday. Snow totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected across the Tug Hill Plateau, while lower elevations, including areas near Oswego and Watertown, are likely to see 3 to 6 inches. A light glaze of ice is also possible, particularly during a brief window of freezing drizzle this evening.
The bulk of the accumulating snow is expected later tonight through Wednesday evening, a period that includes the Wednesday morning commute. Roads across Tug Hill routes, rural county highways, and secondary streets could become snow-covered and slippery, with reduced visibility during heavier bursts.
Local highway crews will be treating roads, but motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall. Conditions may fluctuate as snow mixes with sleet at times.
Snow gradually tapers late Wednesday night, though slick spots could linger into early Thursday. Advisories remain in effect, and additional updates may be issued if ice or snowfall amounts increase.
