Plattsburgh, New York – Roads across the North Country could ice over as early as daybreak Tuesday, with freezing rain creating hazardous travel conditions that last into Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Wednesday for northern New York and parts of northwest Vermont, including St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Clinton counties, as well as Grand Isle County. Ice accumulations up to 0.20 inches are expected.

The most significant impacts are expected along key routes including US-11 near Malone, I-87 around Plattsburgh, and Route 37 near Massena, where untreated surfaces could quickly become slick during the morning commute. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, increasing the risk of accidents.

Communities such as Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, and Champlain may also see icy sidewalks and secondary roads, making both driving and walking dangerous through Tuesday and into early Wednesday.

Residents should prepare for possible isolated power outages as ice builds on trees and power lines. Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions at 511ny.org or newengland511.org before heading out.

The advisory remains in effect through Wednesday morning, with additional alerts possible if ice accumulation becomes more widespread.
