Albany, NY – Residents of the Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks should prepare for snowfall starting tonight as a lake effect snow band develops over the region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Saturday, with snow totals ranging from 3 to 6 inches in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall will primarily impact Herkimer and Old Forge, with areas closer to Lake Ontario, such as Caroga Lake, experiencing significant accumulations. The advisory warns of slippery roads and reduced visibility, particularly along key routes like Route 28 and Interstate 90.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the weekend, with highs around 25 degrees and lows dipping into the teens. Gusty winds up to 20 mph will contribute to the cold and create hazardous travel conditions, especially during peak snowfall hours overnight.

Saturday will see lingering snow showers before tapering off by the afternoon. As the system clears, partly sunny skies and frigid temperatures will dominate Sunday, with a high of just 28 degrees. By Monday, rain may mix with snow, potentially complicating commutes again.

Travelers are urged to check road conditions and drive cautiously. Residents should have winter safety kits ready and ensure walkways are clear of ice. Stay updated by following the NWS and local advisories for real-time weather updates.
