Rensselaer, NY – Severe thunderstorms could drench parts of Rensselaer and Albany County by 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, as a summer storm system brings lightning, heavy rain, and the threat of localized flooding during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, storms are expected to intensify between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., with a 90% chance of rain and possible thunder into midday. Southwest winds could gust up to 11 mph. Rainfall totals may reach up to three-quarters of an inch, creating hazardous driving conditions on I-90, US-4, and local roads during peak travel hours.

Drivers should delay travel Tuesday morning if possible and avoid flooded underpasses. Power outages are possible in areas with strong wind gusts or lightning. After 11 a.m., showers may taper off, but clouds will linger with a high near 84°F.

By Wednesday, skies clear with sunny, calm weather continuing through the Fourth of July. Independence Day looks ideal for outdoor gatherings with a high of 81°F and no rain expected.
