Burlington, VT – Travelers across northern New York should brace for hazardous Thanksgiving morning conditions as a strong lake effect snow event develops, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington.

Forecasters say snow bands are expected to form early Thursday, with total accumulations between 4 and 10 inches possible in areas downwind of Lake Ontario and Lake Champlain. Heaviest snow will likely fall in localized bands, creating sharp differences in accumulation over short distances.

The Weather Service warns that visibility could drop rapidly, making travel difficult or dangerous, especially for holiday travelers heading out early. Road conditions may deteriorate quickly as snow covers highways and secondary roads.

Officials urge drivers to monitor the latest forecasts, allow extra travel time, and carry emergency supplies if driving through snow-prone areas. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Thanksgiving Day as snow bands weaken.
