Burlington, VT – A major early-season winter storm is set to impact northern New York and northern Vermont today through Monday evening, bringing 10 to 18 inches of snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Winter Storm Warnings begin as early as 10 a.m. Sunday for Southeastern St. Lawrence, Southern Franklin, and Western Clinton Counties in New York, where 10 to 16 inches of snow is expected. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially on open stretches and higher terrain.
In Vermont, warnings take effect at 1 p.m. Sunday for Orleans, Lamoille, Washington, Eastern Chittenden, and Eastern Franklin Counties. These areas are forecast to receive 10 to 18 inches, with the highest totals on northwestern and western mountain slopes. The NWS notes that snowfall amounts will vary significantly with elevation.
Travel may become “very difficult to impossible,” the agency warned, with slick bridges and overpasses, rapidly changing road conditions, and poor visibility during heavier bursts of snow. The system is also expected to impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes, raising the risk of accidents and delays.
The combination of wet, heavy snow and gusty winds also increases the chance of sporadic power outages, as tree limbs may bend or break under the load. Residents are urged to prepare for disruptions and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall.
Officials recommend carrying extra food, water, and flashlights if travel cannot be avoided. Road conditions updates are available at 511NY.org and NewEngland511.org.
