Increasing weather impacts are expected across Vermont and northern New York today through Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington, as a dynamic storm system moves through the region.

Conditions will begin on the quieter side early today, but gusty south winds will steadily strengthen, especially this afternoon and evening. Wind gusts will be most noticeable along Route 11 north of the Adirondacks, where travel and isolated power disruptions may occur. While temperatures remain relatively mild at first, the strengthening winds will signal the arrival of more impactful weather.

By late tonight into Friday morning, moderate to heavy rainfall will overspread the region. This rainfall may lead to river rises, particularly in areas that are already vulnerable to runoff. While widespread flooding is not guaranteed, residents near rivers and streams should remain alert as water levels increase through Friday.

The greatest impacts are expected Friday, when strong southerly winds peak alongside the heaviest rainfall. Travel conditions may become messy, especially during the Friday morning commute, with ponding on roads and reduced visibility. Residents are encouraged to secure holiday decorations, outdoor furniture, and loose items ahead of the strongest winds.

As colder air arrives later Friday, rain will transition back to snow showers, particularly across higher elevations and east-facing slopes, where stronger wind gusts may persist. Some locations may briefly experience a rain/snow or sleet mix before colder air fully takes hold.

By early Saturday morning, lingering snow showers and gusty winds may continue, gradually tapering off. While not a blockbuster winter storm, this system packs multiple hazards in a short time, including wind, heavy rain, river rises, and snow.

Residents across Vermont and northern New York should stay weather-aware, plan ahead for Friday travel, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
