Albany, NY – A late-season winter storm is bringing hazardous travel conditions to parts of eastern New York and southern Vermont through late Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday for northern Herkimer, Hamilton, Fulton, Warren, and Saratoga Counties in New York, as well as Bennington and Windham Counties in Vermont. The region can expect mixed precipitation, including sleet and freezing rain, with ice accumulations reaching up to a quarter of an inch.
Officials warn that untreated roads, sidewalks, and driveways will be dangerously slick during the Thursday morning commute. Motorists are urged to reduce speed and allow extra travel time. The advisory also emphasizes caution for pedestrians, especially when stepping onto outdoor surfaces.
The combination of snow, sleet, and ice is not unusual for early April in this region, but the quarter-inch ice potential raises the risk for power disruptions and tree damage in some higher elevation areas.
Residents are advised to monitor local road conditions and delay non-essential travel where possible. Crews are expected to treat roads overnight and into the morning to improve traction and reduce hazards.
