Burlington, Vermont – Rivers across northern Vermont and northern New York could rise quickly this week as warming temperatures begin melting the region’s snowpack, prompting a Flood Watch through Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the watch covers all of northern New York and northern and central Vermont, including communities such as Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland, Plattsburgh, St. Albans, Middlebury, and White River Junction. The primary concern is rapid snowmelt followed by widespread rainfall expected Wednesday into Thursday, which could send river levels climbing.

Forecasters say rising water may also break up river ice, increasing the risk of ice jams that can cause sudden flooding upstream. Streams and creeks may quickly spill out of their banks, particularly in low-lying or flood-prone areas across the Champlain Valley, Adirondacks, and Green Mountains.

Major waterways including the Winooski, Lamoille, Ausable, and Missisquoi rivers could experience sharp rises as runoff accelerates. Residents living near rivers or streams should monitor water levels closely and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

Officials advise clearing nearby drainage areas, moving equipment away from riverbanks, and staying alert for additional alerts. Flood warnings may be issued later this week if water levels rise faster than expected as rain arrives Wednesday and continues into Thursday.
